Conflict in the Middle East

The overall conflict in the Middle East seems to complex to understand for many. A lot of people don't even attempt to follow what's going on, nor can they determine who's good and who's bad. As Christians we use the Bible to get God’s perspective of evil or righteous nations. Most of the nations, in the Middle East are Islamic and some incorrectly assume that all Islamic nations are allies. But there are very distinct divisions within the Middle East between Islamic nations. For example, there is a Civil War in Yemen, but who’s fighting whom. Different factions in Syria and Iraq are fighting. It is not clear exactly who's the aggressor and who’s being attacked in some cases. The fighting in Syria is even more difficult to discern friend or foe since the defeat of ISIS. Should the US support the Syrian government, who seems to be the only force protecting Christians in Syria? The news media, depending on which news source you follow, seem to divide the nations between who support US and who's against the US or Israel. Others identify the divide between Shia and Sunni Muslims. But none of these distinctions are exactly correct.

I had a friend from the Middle East that use explain how some of divisions in the Middle East work. He told me it largely revolved around certain royal families and other religious leaders who’ve been in contention for control for the last 100+ years. There other complexities revolving the divisions that are never explained in the news.

The Sykes-Picot Treaty divided the countries in the Middle East after WWI. This treaty has left the Middle East a mess. Influential families in the region worked with Great Britain and France to draw the borders to drawn to benefit themselves and divide their enemies. The current borders between Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia didn’t account for tribal territories, Shia/ Sunni territories, or preexisting territories. Britain and its allies were determined to seize as much economic gain and control as possible in the region following the fall of the Ottoman Empire.

I recently ran across this video that I'm posting that has done the best job of explaining what my friend was talking about. I thought it was important to share this because it explains many things we see happening in the Middle East. It also allies with what the Bible describes what happened in the Middle East during the in times. The ongoing cold for between Saudi Arabia and Iran is the source of almost all the conflicts with the exception of wars with Israel. But I encourage everyone to take a look at this video to help understand the larger conflict that has generated so many others in the Middle East. Based on what we see happening today, it seems almost inevitable the Cold War between Iran and Saudi Arabia will eventually turn into a live war, unless Iran engages with Israel first. When used correctly analyze the conflict you won't be surprised to see why Saudi Arabia would befriend Israel before joining Iran.
